The process of product design and development
2025-04-15
The Product Design process consists of four stages: concept development and product planning stage, detailed design stage, small-scale production stage, and incremental production stage.

- In the conceptual development and product planning stage, integrate information related to market opportunities, competitiveness, technological feasibility, and production needs to determine the framework of the new product. This includes the conceptual design of the new product, target market, expected performance level, investment requirements, and financial impact. Before deciding whether to develop a new product, companies can also use small-scale experiments to validate concepts and viewpoints. The experiment may include sample preparation and soliciting potential customer feedback.
- In the detailed design phase, once the plan is approved, the new product project enters the detailed design phase. The basic activities of this stage are the design and construction of product prototypes, as well as the development of tools and equipment used in commercial production. The core of detailed product engineering is the "design build test" cycle. The required products and processes should be conceptually defined and reflected in the product prototype, followed by simulated usage testing of the product. If the prototype cannot reflect the expected performance characteristics, engineers should seek design improvements to compensate for this difference and repeat the "design build test" cycle. The completion of the detailed product engineering phase is marked by the final design of the product meeting the specified technical requirements and being signed and approved.
- In the stage of small-scale production, individual parts processed and tested on production equipment are assembled together and tested as a system in the factory. In small-scale production, a certain quantity of products should be produced, and the ability of new or improved production processes to cope with commercial production should also be tested. It is at this moment in the Product Development process that the entire system (design, detailed design, tools and equipment, components, assembly sequence, production supervision, operators, technicians) is assembled together.
- The final stage of development is incremental production. In incremental production, production begins at a relatively low quantity level; When an organization's confidence in its (and suppliers') continuous production capacity and ability to sell products in the market increases, output begins to increase. So, as stated by Omon Design, designers can only prepare and produce renderings with a clear idea of the steps, in order to achieve the effect of "clear to the observer". Because a design is only about the idea, it often requires other people or tools to cooperate with your idea in order to complete it. Therefore, it is also to give peripheral people an understanding of your thoughts and ideas to achieve your concept.
